UNDERSTANDING VARIOUS SKIN IRREGULARITIES

What are these?

Skin growths, ranging from angionomas, moles and milia to skin tags and sebaceous hyperplasia, are common occurrences caused by various factors, including genetics, sun exposure, over active oily glands and aging. While mostly harmless, these growths can impact our confidence.

Is Removal Necessary?

Although these are benign growths, removal is always recommended for a number of factors. Since they are growths, they will continue to grow over a long period of time and their growth rate is slow but not measurable. The benefit of removal is when they are smaller is beneficial as the larger they become, the risk of enlarging into the skin causing scarring.

Why Do Skin Growths Occur?

Varying in skin and location, skin growths, such as milia are a development of hardened keratin and skin proteins whereas, sebaceous hyperplasia, light moles, are a result of overactive oil glands.

Peace Of Mind

Although the majority of these growths such as solar lentigens are benign, they are a direct result of sun exposure. Some can be an indication of physiological changes.
As we age seborrhic keratosis a raised greyish scale can become cancerous in our later years as a reaction to sun exposure and an increased number of melanocytes. It is always beneficial to remove these to prevent unwanted outcomes. If you are concerned with how they any are presenting we recommend a Dermatological mapping to track them on a yearly or bi-yearly basis.

LEARN THE SIGNS ON HOW TO RECOGNIZE SKIN CHANGES. KEY INDICATORS EMPOWER AND INFORM YOU ON SKIN HEALTH

Understanding Leads To Cancer Prevention

Understanding the appearance between actinic keratoses and seborrheic keratoses holds prime importance concerning the potential progression towards  skin cancer. Let’s delve into why this awareness is key in the journey to long-term skin health.

Actinic keratoses, with their scaly, dry plaques often clustered on the skin, possess the capacity to evolve into skin cancer over time. Swift recognition and intervention are essential, as these patches may exhibit these characteristics:

  • Easy bleeding
  • Prolonged healing
  • Sensations of sensitivity
  • Raised and scaly
  • Lifts easily
  • Burning
  • Itching

By discerning these signs early on, individuals can take proactive measures to prevent the transformation of actinic keratoses into a more serious and potentially life-threatening condition.

In contrast, seborrheic keratoses, while benign, can be mistaken for skin cancer due to their visual resemblance. The key lies in avoiding misidentification of serious condition for a benign one, fostering accurate diagnosis, and alleviating concerns. Regular vigilance and consultation with a skincare professional are crucial to dispel any doubts and ensure a correct understanding of the nature of these growths. Always remember the universal standard when identifying potential skin growths:

  • Asymmetry of shape when divided one side is larger.
  • Borders are irregular, scalloped or ill-defined border.
  • Colour is irregular varying depth: Brown, red, blue, white.
  • Diameter as small as 4mm with 6mm being the average size.
  • Evolution will be different in size, shape, colour, than other mole.

By arming oneself with knowledge and staying attuned to the subtleties of these skin conditions, individuals empower themselves in the pursuit of lasting peace of mind. Early detection not only contributes to enhanced skin health but also acts as a formidable defense against the potential progression of conditions that could pose more significant risks over time. At La Clinica, we prioritize knowledge and timely action for the well-being of your skin and advocate for Dermatological mapping
