Under the general direction of the Vice President for Research, the Grant Writer will research and identify grant opportunities, prepare comprehensive and interdisciplinary grant proposals, and manage the grant writing process from start to finish. This includes developing project plans, researching and preparing grant budgets, maintaining grant records, and supporting the administrative aspects of post-award grant processing for the Department of Research Operations. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated track record of writing successful grant proposals and possess strong project management, organizational, and communication skills. The grant writer is primarily responsible for identifying external funding opportunities for all faculty at the university and for the Office of Research. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work with COSH, COM, and CON faculty to plan, write, and edit research grants for submission to federal (NIH, NSF, CDC, HRSA, etc.), state, and county agencies as well as foundations.
  • Research, identify, prepare, and submit required documentation for grant funding opportunities for the Department of Research Operations in collaboration with the Office of Sponsored Programs. This includes meeting with Department stakeholders to produce reports/content required for such submissions, establishing relationships with internal campus partners in research to establish grants within the University system, and working with department heads to produce any required reports/follow-up documentation that might be required for awarded grants.
  • Maintain a grant proposal-tracking system to ensure timely submission of proposals and accurate records of proposals. Provide quarterly reports of progress, including a summary of grant proposals worked on and the level of assistance in each case.
  • Coordinate grant and proposal writing activities with the department heads and PIs.
  • Collaborate with PI and research staff to communicate and resolve any issues that arise concerning proposal submission.
  • Develop and maintain a master file on pending grants and contracts worked on.
  • Identify and recommend specific funding opportunities that may be of interest to individual CDU PIs.
  • Manage proposal submissions for PIs within their assigned portfolio, including meeting with PIs to discuss proposed resources, drafting all administrative components of the proposal (including the budget, in collaboration with the Office of Sponsored Programs), and coordinating submission to the sponsor.
  • Support PIs in the preparation and submission of reports and other grant deliverables.
  • Work with PIs to prepare statements of work, logic models, timelines, and budgets for grant applications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:

EDUCATION:

•Master's degree in disciplines related to the health sciences. A PhD is strongly preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

3-5 years of experience in grant writing and budget development experience with a focus on NIH and NSF grants and a proven track record of success evidenced by securing funding, preferably. Comprehensive knowledge of biomedical research, including the ability to search biomedical databases. Experience that should demonstrate a proven track record of securing new funding opportunities; comprehensive knowledge of research, and the ability to distinguish and identify opportunities for faculty members at CDU Previous grant budget development and management experience Knowledge of federal regulations, funding policies, procedures, and applicable local, state, federal, and university regulations. KNOWLEDGE/ABILITY/SKILLS: Knowledge of relevant federal regulations and funding policies. Ability to implement application tracking system and follow-up processes. Excellent writing and verbal skills Excellent computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Access, PowerPoint, and Excel.
