Job Summary
Under administrative direction, is responsible for managing the performance of professional staff in work involving the coordination of complex administrative projects and activities for the World Heritage Center that require a high degree of specialized knowledge. This includes planning, directing, managing, coordinating, promoting, and overseeing the exhibits, events, and programs at the World Heritage Center and related facilities.

Coordinates assigned activities with other City departments and outside agencies and provides highly responsible and complex project management, conducts research, provides data, recommendations, and implements solutions to achieve the goals and objectives of the World Heritage Center. Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff.

This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Monday-Friday; Evenings and weekends based on facility operating schedule and events.

Essential Job Functions


  • Manages all World Heritage Center programs, exhibits, services, activities, and daily operations
  • Monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of exhibits, programs, and events; identifies and implements improvements
  • Manages facility records, annual budget, and seeks funding opportunities; oversees the selection and contracting of outside contractors.
  • Leads the development, management, and coordination of exhibits, cultural programming, and work plans through staff and contractors.
  • Manages the performance of professional staff in work involving organizational structure review, operations research, and related work reviewing departments, divisions, and programs.
  • Assists in planning, directing, and coordinating, through subordinate level staff, the department work plan; meets with management staff to identify and resolve problems; assigns projects and programmatic areas of responsibility; and reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures.
  • Assists in selecting, motivating, and evaluating department staff; provides or coordinates training and works with employees to correct deficiencies; and assists in implementing and administering disciplinary and termination procedures.
  • Promotes cooperation and collaboration among World Heritage partners and the community; participates in related events and workshops.
  • Assists with marketing efforts and outreach programs, including website content, social media, press releases, media interviews, and educational events.
  • Stays current with trends, attends professional meetings, represents the department at conferences, and assists with outreach programs.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with preferable coursework in history, museum studies, curatorial studies, art history, anthropology, archeology, or related field.
  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible professional experience in planning, business, finance, or related field; including two (2) years of supervisory experience.
Preferred Requirements
  • Master's degree in related field of study; history, anthropology, museum studies, curatorial studies etc.
  • Broad knowledge of history, especially of Texas.
  • Knowledge of research methodology, principles, and procedures.
  • Experience working with a broad range of stakeholders and organizations and community engagement.
  • Experience with ongoing public awareness, education, collecting oral histories, archives, research and/or training programs relating to World Heritage, tourism, history, and culture.
  • Familiar with digital exhibitions and software: touchscreens, multimedia, etc.
  • Knowledge of local government and public administration
  • At least two years of related experience in designing and/or programming spaces with exhibit and curating components.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Knowledge of administrative and management procedures, project management, practices, and techniques, specifically related to cultural heritage tourism, educational programming, museum and/or archive activities, services, collections and exhibits
  • Knowledge of research techniques and methods, specifically methods and techniques for historical research.
  • Knowledge of current museum interpretation methods and strategies; exhibit and program development
  • Knowledge of general retail principles to include management, operations, cash handling, merchandising, purchasing and product development.
  • Skill in utilizing personal computers and associated MS Windows- based software applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Teams) in the completion of assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community stakeholders, key World Heritage partners, and City staff; at times serving as liaisons.
  • Ability to interact and maintain healthy and positive relationships with a diverse population: staff, students, visitors, and educators.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
  • Ability to compile and prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to work in a setting requiring self-motivation/cooperative decision making and to work effectively with diverse groups of people
