About the Position:

TJFACT is seeking a Radio Technician to support our DOS DT (Diplomatic Technology) IT team in Baghdad and Erbil, Iraq.

The Radio Technician provides expert-level support for all Department of State-owned radio communications equipment. Specific responsibilities vary, but in general, are responsible for maintaining all aspects of an enterprise radio network including base stations, repeaters, cabling, duplexers and antennas, ensuring that mission-critical resources are always available when needed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for providing radio frequency and land mobile radio support for Motorola, Codan, and Kenwood radio systems.
  • Maintain, monitor, troubleshoot, repair, and install radio equipment including repeaters, tuners, antennas, base stations, vehicle radios, handheld radios, and all ancillary equipment required for a radio network.
  • Install infrastructure required for connecting antennas, on towers, rooftops, and vehicles, to the transmitting unit, as well as any other
  • Responsible for designing, implementing and maintaining UHF/VHF/HF radio communications systems throughout Iraq. This includes (but is not limited to):
    • Installing/maintaining base stations, repeaters, duplexers, and antennas.
  • Performs ad-hoc and/or scheduled operational testing of individual components to ensure full network operation.
  • In the event of a loss of communication with a particular device or area of service, the Radio Technician will troubleshoot, down to the least replaceable unit, faulty systems and perform field level maintenance to sustain mission-critical tactical communications.
  • In accordance with published security standards, the Radio Technician will refresh the encryption key on individual units with a minimum of user inconvenience.
  • Radio Technicians travel to off-site locations to install, upgrade and maintain equipment, troubleshoot connectivity issues and perform radio rekeys.
  • Follow Department of State inventory and security requirements.
  • Open crates, prepare receiving reports and report deficiencies.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 5 years' experience or 13 years of job-related experience in lieu of education.
  • Motorola Business Radio Certification
  • Professional and Commercial Kenwood Radio hardware and software certification, or ETA Journeyman certification
  • Certification in Tower climbing.
  • Extensive knowledge of HF/VHF/UHF systems as implemented in Iraq including cryptographic interfaces, materials, tools, and methods common to the trade applicable codes and safety regulations.
  • Motorola MOTOTRBO digital trunking and land mobile Radio equipment
  • Excellent knowledge of radio spectrum, including VHF, UHF, HF, and applied atmospheric propagation transmission/reception practices and principles.
  • Excellent skills with Motorola and Kenwood land-mobile VHF/UHF radio hardware and software.
  • Experience providing oversight for assorted hardware procurement, logistics, and maintenance programs.
  • Experience in performing technical site surveys to determine structural and technical requirements.
  • Experience conducting fault isolation and technical control of radio network components.
  • Experience working in confined areas such as crawlspaces, attics, utility pits, tunnels, manholes and other confined spaces.
  • Experience working on scaffolding, extension ladders, rooftops, ledges, and communication towers up to 100 meters in height.
  • Experience installing and maintaining handheld, base station, repeater stations and mobile vehicle land mobile radios.
  • Experience performing manual installation operations to include hammer drilling, core drilling, pulling wire and cable, running, and installing conduit and terminating various cables.
  • Experience moving and handling heavy objects such as crates, equipment racks, repeater and base station radios and other building components and materials.
  • Experience performing inventories including open, pack and prepare crates for transit following established Department of State POSHO regulations.
  • Experience changing batteries, installing, test and repair ground network systems to ensure compliance with US electrical code, take electrical measurements, and make appropriate electrical connections.
  • Experience working in and around electrical service panels and Uninterruptible Powel Source (UPS) units.
  • Able to provide on-the-job training for newly hired locally engaged staff members in all facets of the position.
  • Active security clearance.
