MAINE STATE MUSEUM -AGENCY ONLY- PART-TIME, 2O HOURS WEEKLY Opening Date: January 16, 2025 Closing Date: January 31, 2025 Job Class Code: 3121 Grade: 15 Salary: $17.14 - $23.41/Hourly Position Number: 014500468 JOB DESCRIPTION The Maine State Museum has a part-time, 20-hour-per-week position for a Museum Technician I position in the Education Division. When the Maine State Museum is open to the public, it may be open six days a week (Tue-Sun). This position requires working some weekends.
The Museum Technician I position provides visitor services at the admission and information desk and within the exhibit galleries by providing basic interpretation of the exhibits on display, assisting with exhibit and visitor safety, and helping with exhibit maintenance. This position does not give formal educational programs or tours. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work as part of a team, adapt to changing situations, and work well under pressure. Work is performed under general supervision.
TYPICAL DUTIES - Provides a wide variety of informational and educational experiences for museum visitors based on museum exhibits and content.
- Ensures efficient and safe day-to-day running of the museum's public galleries and admission desk, including opening and closing of the public spaces and security of the museum; executes emergency and evacuation procedures when needed; maintains the operation of the exhibit galleries by providing daily monitoring and upkeep in collaboration with the exhibit preparator; ensures positive museum experiences for all museum visitors
REQUIREMENTS - Greet and orient general visitors and scheduled groups to the building and exhibits.
- Interact in a positive manner with visitors of different ages and abilities and provide excellent customer service to all visitors
- Use a ticketing system to calculate admission fees
- Maintain accurate visitation data through the use of computer software programs
- Answer general questions about the museum and exhibits
- Coordinate the movement of multiple groups to and from their scheduled activities
- Assist museum educators in preparing and presenting museum programs and events
- Maintain knowledge of applicable security rules and safety codes and provide security for the collection on display in the exhibit galleries
- Provide basic interpretation of the exhibits to general visitors and school groups
- Maintain the exhibit galleries in good working order and assist with the operation of audio-visual presentations
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Use the museum's scheduling database to create accurate reservation materials for visitors and groups
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Two (2) years education and/or experience in appropriate museum specialty.
