Summary 
Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation d/b/a Brooklyn Bridge Park (“BBP”) is a not-for-profit corporation, a public authority, and the entity charged with developing, maintaining, and operating the public park known as Brooklyn Bridge Park, an 85-acre, 1.3-mile public space that stretches along the Brooklyn waterfront.  

BBP’s mission is provide an exceptional public space that connects people, nature, and the waterfront through inclusive, innovative, and sustainable management and design, and its vision is to be a world-class park for all, recognized as a leader in sustainable financial and ecological practices contributing to a healthier and more livable city. 

Working closely with BBP’s General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel, the Legal Intern will be tasked with assisting all aspects of the legal practice of in-house, not-for-profit corporation counsel. The Legal Intern will work collaboratively with all departments within BBP, the New York City Law Department and other government agencies (as needed), and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy, to support the development and maintenance of an effective, solutions-oriented legal department.  

The Legal Intern will be expected to work a minimum of two (2) days per week in the BBP offices, which are located at 334 Furman Street and 330 Furman Street, Brooklyn, NY.

Essential Functions 

  • Contracts. Under supervision, the Legal Intern will support the review, drafting, and negotiation of a variety of contracts. These may include but are not limited to BBP’s procurements of goods or services, concession agreements, special event agreements, and capital construction contracts. 
  • Compliance. Under supervision, the Legal Intern will support BBP’s compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations. These may include but are not limited to BBP’s compliance with the New York State Open Meetings Law, Freedom of Information Law, and Public Authorities Law; relevant New York City laws regarding campaign finance and human rights; and insurance and risk management requirements of the City of New York. 

  • Real Estate. Under supervision, the Legal Intern will support BBP’s real estate and land use needs. These may include but are not limited to BBP’s administration of development site leases, condominium sales and refinancing, and environmental review. 

  • Litigation. Under supervision, the Legal Intern will support BBP’s management of insurance and indemnity coverage and claims, discovery and witness requests, and other litigation support obligations. 

Critical Competencies: 

  • Problem Solving and Collaboration. BBP is a small organization with limited resources. The Legal Intern will be expected to gather and analyze information quickly, and to assist others in the development of reasonable solutions. 

  • Communication. BBP employs approximately 65 people; two comprise the legal department. The Legal Intern will be expected to demonstrate excellent written and verbal skills, clearly and effectively communicating to a mostly non-legal audience. 

  • Planning. The Legal Intern will be expected to use their time efficiently, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines. 

  • Quality Management and Integrity. The Legal Intern will be expected to demonstrate attention to detail and maintain high ethical and professional standards. 

  • Adaptability. The Legal Intern will be expected to adapt to frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events.
